A Message From Nate
Hello,
Just wanted to send a message to everyone who has attended the shows thus far and say thanks so much for making this tour the best tour we have ever done and more specifically I want to apologize to the people who were planning on attending the Vancouver show, its not really in my nature to cancel a show because I have been sick, in fact its only happened once before, and everyone who knows me knows that I am always sick, but I guess 12 straight shows with only one day off in between really did a number on me. I'm really sorry that we weren't able to play in Vancouver because playing every show in Canada was something I was really looking forward to, especially as a huge raptors fan and as a huge fan of Canada in general, I'm feeling a little better so I'm gonna test my voice out tonite in Calgary and promise those who didn't get to see us in bc that we will be back soon, doing something extra special. Also, special thanks to all of the other bands and people in the format for putting on a free show that night regardless, that gesture alone proves how lucky I am to be on such a wonderful tour with such special people. Sorry again and I hope to see everyone really soon.

DOG PROBLEMS FOR FREE and more news from Nate
wasssssssup,
haven't talked in awhile...in fact, it’s been so long since i've typed that
i actually forgot where the comma key was...i kept hitting shift and all
these other buttons...thus my first minutes of typing went like this...
wassssssup{
"no that's not right"
wasssssup'
"noooo"
wassssssup;
"ok maybe i should look at the keyboard"
and now i’ve wasted 30 seconds of your life...you still owe me thirty...ah
forget it...i won’t hold you to it...i’m just happy to have a few days at
home to do nothing (that’s not true...i’ve gotta go to LA tomorrow nite and
finish up a kids song)...life was pretty nonstop after the guster
tour...we went to spain...rehearsed a lot for the dvd...played the dvd
show...and then sam and i had to go straight to hawaii for my sisters
wedding...now it’s all over and i have a few weeks off to brush up my
tennis skills (my basketball obsession is a thing of the past) before we
head out for the most exciting tour of our (what is starting to feel like
a very long) careers.
ZzZzZz
ok lemme fill you in on the important parts of that last paragraph (aside
from sisters wedding...when sam threw our car rental keys in the ocean)
1. THE DVD IS FINALLY DONE!!!!!!!!
we stressed out a whole lot...and for nothing...everything turned out
fantastic...thanks to everyone at the mayan theatre in LA, thanks to the
wonderful director Sam Erickson and his wonderful crew, thanks to mooka
kinney (www.mookakinney.com) for personally designing our amazing suits,
thanks to all of the guests (whom i will not name right now in hopes that
it might surprise someone when they buy the dvd), thanks to all of our
friends and family for supporting us on such a special night, and most
importantly thanks to the people who paid to see us freaking out and being
more nervous than we have ever been before...it really was my favorite
show that we have ever played and it couldn’t have been possible without
such a fun and patient crowd....now we just have to let the director put
it all together and it will be out in no time.
2. BUY DOG PROBLEMS RIGHT HERE
psyche!!!! tricked you...we aren’t going to make you pay for dog
problems...in honor of the 1 year anniversary we are going to be giving
away dog problems for free for the next couple of weeks...i know you’re
wondering why we would do such a thing...and it’s actually pretty
simple...we aren’t owned by a giant corporation so we can do whatever the
fuck we want....sure we are standing to lose a little bit of money...but i
get to make music for a living...if you haven’t had the opportunity to get
the record yet because you’ve been too busy trying to pay rent and working
a REAL job....than click there and go download it for free...we want you
to have it...and at least you’re not stealing it...it’s free...give it a
try...then put off rent to go see us playing at a city near you...which is
exactly what we are doing this summer...
3. COME SEE US ON TOUR
this is it america, the last chance to check us out before we all grow
beards and go into "new album mode"...we're pretty much going everywhere
(don't get pissy just because we aren’t coming to your certain town in
iowa...thank god or whoever that we are even coming to iowa) and it’s going
to be with a whole bunch of bands that we love and hope you love too (we
don’t have to bring any bands out as favors or support any bands we've
never heard)...the only way i could possibly go on tour for almost 3
months is if it was worth it..and this tour is going to be so great that i
wish it could go all year....so get tickets now while you still have the
chance (or get them next week or the week after while you still have the
chance...but hopefully there will be no chances to get tickets after
that...being that we are giving our record away for free, i have to find
new ways to get money and pay for tennis lessons)
4. I THINK THAT’S IT! for now
see you this summer...thanks for everything.

Patchwork quilts are made up of a number of squares of material that all get sewn together into one piece of art.You will need: 1 piece of material 6" square (any material will do, cotton, denim, etc.) decorate the square however you want in a way that relates to the song. A Letter From Nate
Hi Everyone,
Right now I'm on an airplane on my way back from a little mini vacation in
New York city...obviously there is a child screaming in my ear next to
me...so I've put my headphones on...cranked the "Wicked" soundtrack...and
I've decided to write you all a letter of appreciation...kinda.
Thanks so much to everyone for the constant support as we keep trying to
make this music thing work...its been so much fun so far...and lately (the
last year) it keeps getting more and more exciting...and without all of
your help I don't think cynical fucks like us would be having as great a
time...a good example of that (aside from the countless concerts) would be
the Carson Daly show...the staff was as nice as anyone we've ever worked
with in a situation like that...and they helped make our first tv
appearance much easier...but we still would have been a deer in headlights
if it wasn't for 90% of the crowd being filled with people who knew the
words and danced along...you guys are the best....so with that being
said...we have a busy year ahead of us...I'll fill you in with as much as I
know right now...
Tonite we are going to be on the Carson Daly show...I don't know how the
times work out...but you can look it up...we had a blast doing the
show...we ended up playing and taping 4 songs (She Doesn't Get It will be
on tonite) and apparently its the most songs they've ever had anyone
record...so hopefully they'll show more of our performance on later
episodes...we also got a gift bag...that was pretty exciting...I stole the
card for a free tattoo (I don't know what I could possibly get) and it just
so happens Carmen Electra makes weight loss pills...i stole a bottle from
our gift bag in hopes that it will one day make me a better basketball
player...or at least 6'6...nonetheless it was exciting for a bunch of
hicks from Arizona (and a useless guitar player from Boston)....after the
taping we stuck around in LA a few extra days and filmed the video for
"She Doesn't Get It"...Sam and i wrote the concept one nite while we were
on that one tour we were on a few months ago....so I cant tell you whether
or not the treatment for the video is any good...but I can tell you that
we think its going to look great...we had a great director...and we had
such a fun time on the set with all the kids (I cant say any more)...it
should be done in the coming weeks..and hopefully be debuting in the next
month...which is when "She Doesn't Get It" will take its behind the back
bank shot at radio as our next single release...should
be...interesting...meanwhile we will be writing music at home and getting
ready to go to Japan for a week at the end of February...we are so excited
to be going to Japan...and at the same time we are sad we aren't going to
make the trip to Australia...I'm really sorry to everyone that was hoping
to see us down under...we just didn't feel it was the right time and we
have a bit of a busy schedule around that time...we are going to be
recording a few new or semi new songs...one which will be for a new kids
comp (as the kid next to me is reading this and eating doritos (thanks
jetblue for subduing children with television and snacks)) I'll let you
know more as I know more...but we're all really excited about writing and
recording...I hope to be doing a lot of that while we're on the Guster
tour this spring...i also hope to be playing a lot of frisbee and just
enjoying the weather this spring (I'm probably just saying this because it
was so cold in New York this week)...so after we regain our mojo on the
Guster tour, we are going to take a few weeks off and then record
a...................
I think that's enough for now...in the meantime enjoy yourselves...we will
see you soon.
<3
nate
p.s. sorry Australian supporters...we are really sorry..we are going to
come back during our summer...I swear.

October 24, 2006:
HI FROM NATE (LIVE EP AVAILABLE TODAY!)
Bwana,
So here we are...back on tour...Schey is sleeping above me....Marko is
wandering around somewhere on here wearing gray sweatpants...and New
Mexico looks a lot like Arizona...we are officially out on the road till
xmas and we're all anxiously awaiting the moment we get each other
sick...a lot has been going on lately so I figured I'd do my best to fill
you in...
First off...thanks to everyone that came to the Harry Mitchell benefit at
The Clubhouse to see us with Jimmy Eat World, Stiletto Formal, and Monique
Reagan...it was a wonderful time and it was for a cause we felt compelled
to be a part of...if you were there and listening you might have noticed
we played a cover of the Kinks song "apeman"...be on the lookout for the
song on this next tour with the All American Rejects...and keep checkin
back here to see how you might be able to get a recorded version of that.
Speaking of playing live...and recordings...THE iTUNES EXCLUSIVE LIVE EP
"AND NOW I HOPE YOU'RE ALRIGHT"is released today (October 24th)...I think you should tell all of your friends...and we should
collectively try with all of our power to get that thing in the top
100....whatcha think? pass it on....oh and if you're still interested in
hearing even more live songs from the same concerts....look out...cause
we're gonna release a second ep in December through our site.
Shall I keep going...alright...well...the record is being released in
Japan this week...I couldn't be more excited...it's only a matter of time
before we head over there...and Australia...where it's being released in
November....and Spain....where it's being released in December...and
hopefully the UK...where we are still figuring out label stuff but hope to
have it ready there by January so we can head over by February...
I need a cigarette just thinking about all the flights we're going to have
to take.
But in the meantime we're here in wonderful New Mexico (where I had to
cancel our first show ever last spring due to the joys of traveling with a
bunch of sick dudes)...ihop is about the only thing bumpin right now...so
I think I might head over there and have my 7th cup of coffee today...in
the meantime please come say hello to us on tour....thanks a lot guys.
OH WAIT! theres still more stuff going on...
Right now nylon motion (the wonderful people who directed The Compromise
video) are getting their hands (hint!) on the new Format video...that's
right...we are doing yet another video...this time we dont have to be in
it either!....we will have more info on the "Dog Problems" video later...we're hearing that it will be done as early as next week.
As for next year...after the 2 live eps...after the apeman cover...after
the Dog Problems video...after the worldwide releases...after the All
American Rejects tour...look for us to do another lonnnnng headlining
jaunt across the US and CANADA in support of what will be the next
single... "She Doesnt Get It".
Ok...I'm tired of being a giant commercial...I'm gonna go listen to "Tusk"

Got Mystore? If we spot you, you might win!
Alright boys and girls we've got an awesome (and not to mention super easy) contest starting tomorrow!
As you already know, we introduced MyStore to the world last week. Just in case you forgot (or have been living under a rock) we will briefly explain what MyStore is. MyStore is a new and innovative web plug-in which allows you to sell "Dog Problems" directly from your myspace profile for an extremely cheap price (how cool)! If you want to read more about it and how it works, please head over to the
blog on our myspace page.
So you might be asking yourself, "Where do I come into the picture?"
Well, here is your answer:
Starting tomorrow we will randomly check out our fan's profiles on Myspace. If you have the MyStore player up on your page, we will automatically send you a comment. In addition to the comments 30 lucky myspacers will be chosen to receive one of the following prizes: Autographed FULL ART cd, autographed Dog Problems poster, or an autographed Dog Problems frisbee. It doesn't get easier than that folks!
The HTML is located in the blog (from above).
We will be picking winners starting Friday (the 21st), and going until the following Friday (the 28th).
*The Lovely People of the Living Room
p.s. please do not message us or comment us to check out your profile, you won't win.

On The Edge:
Here's a followup post to our KEDJ "The Edge" kerfuffle post. As it turns out, somebody from The Edge had gotten back to another person at our management company, just before we posted that The Edge wasn't all about The Format this time around. I had been emailing and leaving unreturned messages for the program director but didn't know that someone else at the station had called to confirm the band for a station visit this Monday. This deserves an apology to the Edge folks and hopefully you'll be able to hear new Format music on radio station when they are on the air this Monday at 2pm..the station will also be giving away tickets to the show... tune in!

Summer......from Nate
Hi everyone...
It's summer...if you're from Arizona you know how painful it can be...my
lawn is growing out of control due to the fact that it's too hot for me to
get out there and get it done - although those close to me would most
likely assume its because i am so lazy. (I was asked to do a summer list a
few weeks ago...lazy...me? no.) Summer is for the most part pretty
sweet...I think summer had a lot to do with me wanting to be a musician
(can you say "summer break"?...I hated the thought of going back to school
so much that i wanted to extend "summer break" to "many year break"...and
that is why I make music)...ok I think I just broke the record for the
"most times summers been said in a paragraph without getting to the
point"...here is the point.
My summer playlist (argh...no more of that word...from here on out let's
call it......mummer)
My mummer playlist (aka some things I like to do or listen to during these
mummer months...I suggest you try some of these things..because...after
all...my opinion is actually studied..you get college credits for it):
7. chairs that massage your back: honestly...you crank the AC...you take a
splurge and get one of those silly chairs that massage your back...it's not
exactly the pool..but it's a little less money then putting a pool in your
back yard...since I've gotten this chair I've blown off about 3 people so
that I may sit in it and watch..........
6. the NBA playoffs and the world cup: the Suns lost...doesn't stop me from
wearing these Suns shorts...sure I almost started crying...sure I actually
started to question what I was going to do with my life once the Suns
lost...butI 'ive since gotten over it (dont bring it up)..and I'm going to
enjoy the finals (Florida vs. Texas...that's like saying "which way would
you rather die..strangle or drown...either way you die and its gonna be
slowly) but nonetheless I've chosen to cheer for Dallas (strangle)...and I
might be making this up...but I want to watch soccer for the next month
before we go on tour...I know I know...soccer?..yeah...why not..its that
or the WNBA...(where is baseball you ask?...I dunno)...so with the NBA
playoffs and the world cup happening I dont think I'll ever leave this
chair...(I can plug my laptop into it!!!!!!)...but eventually I'm gonna
have to leave the living room and if that happens I usually go to...
5. the YMCA:...yeah the jokes are obvious...and they're all true!..but I
like going to the basketball court and getting yelled at for being an
inferior player...I'm trying hard...and eventually I'm gonna be good...which
reminds me..I gotta look for a basketball training video online..I need to
build a better jumpshot.
4. poker: this isnt really a mummer thing..this is more like a year round
curse...I'm still not good..but Sam is still addicted...it goes down every
3 nights at my house...because it happens at my place I pretty much throw
my 20 bucks on the table and say "feast gentlemen!"
3. music: I cant say it enough...I've been saying XTC for the last 6
months...but why not purchase the best mummer concept record ever?...go
now...buy SKYLARKING...it takes about 3 listens...after that its one of
your 3 favorite records of all time..once you get through that record go
buy APPLE VENUS...it's also a great mummer record....or you can buy the
record MUMMER...I havent listened to that one as much...I'm sure I'll be
talking about it in the next 4 months..oh...if you dont want to buy an XTC
record then go buy the new Long Winters record...I'm counting the days till
it comes out (June 25) and then I'm buying 5 copies...so that I may never
lose it...also go buy the new Dixie Chicks record...or the new Jolie
Holland...those are also great records..and I think they fit the
mummer...oh and this is where I shamelessly promote myself....DOG
PROBLEMS...very pastoral (I dont know what that means..but they used it to
describe Skylarking..and I use Skylarking to describe Dog Problems...so
it's all related)
2. concerts: the Dog Problems tour...coming to a city near you?
and finally..my mummer finale...the things you need to do this mummer...
1. GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE HEAT....seriously..it sucks...find a friend
with a cabin or a boat and latch onto them...never let them go..make them
your best friend for the mummer...once you get back to school act like
youd never met them..but for now...take advantage of them.
I'm gonna go find a friend with a boat...do the same.

Dog Problems
"im floating with the birds
im talking to the weeds
look what youve done to me"
hi,
sitting on my couch...watching espn...damn its good to be home...things
have been pretty crazy the last 6 months...as a lot of you know, we were
dropped by our label...we went and recorded a new record...labels became
interested...we decided to release it ourselves...we went on tour...and
now im...now im home for the next week...my first week off in six
months...what do i do?...well, my roomate and i got memberships to the
ymca down the street from our house, its an amazing place...downtown
phoenix is pretty much an amazing place...its not like the rest of the
state...speaking of which...im declaring war on scottsdale...its the
opposite of downtown phoenix.
anways, so i wake up at 9am every morning...i dont know what it is
really...ive been a "pro" musician for about 3 years now...we are supposed
to wake up at 11 or 12...i know some dudes that wake up at 1...but
no...since ive been home the last few days ive been going to bed at 1 and
waking up at 9...my roomate has a job...i think it has to do with
that...see, there are 3 showers total in our house...i have the big
bedroom so i have the big shower...since ive been off on tour and
recording he has gotten used to the nice shower in my room (which is
fine...anyone thats gotten close to me knows im not too fond of
showers...so its not like i use it that much)...so every morning around
845 i wake up to my door opening and my roomate going through my room to
use the shower...you know what its like when youre half asleep but you
want to act like youre awake so as not to freak someone out with all the
crazy babble, but you just end up saying all the same crazy babble...i do
that every morning..i turn and look at him and try to act like i wasnt
just dreaming about tootsie rolls and parrots that shatter like
glass..."hey nate, that was some game last nite"...thats usually what
comes out of my mouth...something to that extent..and i think he feels
sorry for me...but continues to walk right into my bathroom, and use the
shower...at this point im awake...i usually have to pee...and i have to
then use his restroom...its a terrible swap...and it always ends with me
wide awake on my front porch (har har)...smoking a cigarette and wondering
how the hell im gonna fall back asleep when the air conditioning is
broke...ah what a wonderful life at home...thats the weird thing..i love
it...now we wake up and we go to the y...we run, we play basketball, we
jump in the pool...we play pool basketball...we get yelled at for dunking
the ball...we dont use soap before we go into the sauna...and the nite
usually ends with a poker tournament...this is the life i love to live
when im away from the road...it too is the opposite of scottsdale...its
who i am...its pretty much who ive become.
see..for the last 23 years its been about the highs and the lows for the
me...ive got an addictive personality...i stay away from a lot of things
because of this...however, when i find things i get generally excited...i
go crazy...its all i think about and all i do for the next
howeverlong...for the first 23 years it was either talking non stop...or
locking myself in my room...its either great or terrible...not good or
bad...dog problems changed that...initially dog problems was supposed to
be that...the original concept of dog problems was to be 2 sides of
music...the first half taking over where interventions had left
off..."we'll be together in the morning"...
we werent...in fact...we were over before interventions was even
released...we were over two weeks after it was recorded...i spent the next
2 years feeling terrible...we got back together...we broke up...we got
dogs...we broke up...we got back together and got dogs...i was still
miserable...but i wanted dog problems to get me through everything...i
wanted it to help me...not anyone else...just me...the first side was
supposed to be me down in the dumps...everything that went down...how the
two of us were dealing with it differently...the second half was supposed
to be a realization...
the first inkling of realization was a day we were on tour... we were all
laughing about something im sure marko or adam said...here i was supposed
to be depressed...but the fact that i can spend all of my days in
different states with my best friends...all of us doing what we
love...that was major!...then my mom called...ive got my parents!...my
friends...what else could i possibly need?....at that point i felt as if a
relationship in a michael bolton sort of way didnt mean anything...it was
the people you surrounded yourself with...those were the people that made
the difference...and that was going to be side two...i was convinced that
when i just closed my eyes and thought about the wonderful people around
me...i was going to be great...not good...great...
i didnt get that far..no...i got back into the relationship...i was sure
it was going to work...at that point life would be perfect...and we all
want perfection right?....things went right back to far from
perfect...things went to terrible...i couldnt stop feeling sorry for
myself...but i had a concept...at that point i figured that even by
singing and recording these positive songs i was going to feel better...so
sam showed me what was then just a short acoustic guitar version of
snails...this was it...this was my first chance to prove to myself that
life can be beautiful...the things is...i had never been more
miserable...i remember writing the lyrics to snails...my roomate was at
work...i was on the bed...on my night stand was a giant bottle of
booze...and somewhere off in california she wasnt calling me back on a
friday nite...so i went to work...listened over and over...i wanted to get
it right...i wanted to be positive...i passed out...then i woke up the
next morning...big headache (p.s. drinking is not really that cool...its
cool when you condemn it for the first 22 years of your life...then it
becomes not cool...then it becomes ok when you moderate yourself)...and i
started writing...everything positive i could think of...i started writing
it...snails was, in sams mind, supposed to be a 2 minute kids song...i
wrote so much that there was no going back...i thought that was
it...snails solved all of my problems.
it didnt get that far either...nothing could shake the depression...i
really started to worry about myself...here i want to feel great...but i
only feel terrible...a few months later it got really really bad...i had
to go to my parents house that nite...i didnt want to be at my house...i
wanted to feel like a kid...its funny how we always want to be adults when
we're younger...we want to drive cars...we want to have girlfriends...i
still didnt consider myself an adult...all i wanted was to come home...be
tucked in...know that everything was going to be alright...i woke up the
next day...she met someone new...ive got to figure myself out...
in the meantime we've got 4 songs we are recording over at our friend
aarons house...(he is an amazing producer..and an amazing musician...and
his house and his roomates have gotten me through a lot of tough
times...theyre some of the only people i know who would rather spend their
saturdays getting dinner and watching a movie instead of going to a
party..i like that)...all of this turmoil in my relationship was going on
at the time...and i was trying to write side two...i couldnt...there was
more fuel to side one....these songs have to be done...so i wrote about
what i knew...and at that point i knew how to feel terrible...so much for
side two...dog problems is going to be one giant mess of depression and
"look what youve done to me".
atlantic got those four songs...as well as a few others...they were not
psyched...to say the least...but some people at the label actually cared
about it enough to say "go record"...so we were able to pick our
producer....we met with a few people...talked to a few more...things were
looking up...dog problems was going to happen...i remember meeting steve
mcdonald at his house...sam and i were excited to be at his house because
we knew his wife anna would prolly be there...anna was the lead
singer/songwriter for a band we used to obsess about called "that
dog"...her brother was one of the ten drummers in the world that i
actually liked...so steve couldnt be so bad...and he wanted to produce our
record...so he had to be pretty cool....he was just that...and more...sam
and i were eating every word that came out of his mouth...he had
stories...he was young, hip, energetic...and yet very all knowing...we saw
someone that was going to let us do whatever we wanted to do...and in the
meantime he was going to make us laugh...and make sure we didnt lose our
minds...from that point on i knew there was someone i could always
trust...i made a friend pretty quick.
things were moving forward...steve mcdonald was to be the producer...i
hated los angeles so there was no way in hell i was going to record
there...we decided palm springs would be perfect...weird...but perfect...i
had a phone conversation with steve that night and we were finalizing
everything...i was going to call atlantic in the morning and let them know
just how everything was going to work....i didnt get that far...i was
sleeping in a blowup bed at the house when my phone rang...i didnt wake up
and answer like it was my roomate and he was coming into my room to use my
shower...this call felt different...right away i was awake...it was our
manager: "youve been dropped"...when i heard that, the first thought going
through my mind wasnt "oh man...how are we going to be famous now and make
boat loads of money?"...it was more like "fuck...but dog problems..we were
supposed to go make dog problems"...the thing is...atlantic wasnt into dog
problems...they were into whatever it was they thought we were...never had
"the first single" made more sense...what was supposed to be a song about
getting the band started and doing something with it, had actually turned
into a song about how stuck we were in the labels eyes because of the
song...i was past that...we're proud of something we wrote when we were 19
and 20...but when i think of music i think of progression...i think of all
of the wonderful records i had been introduced to when i had nothing to do
riding in a van....i think of all of the new influences...all the
instruments...all of the "how did they do that?"...and i think of how much
it gets me through everything...music has been the consecutive great thing
in my life...its been that one thing...and with dog problems it wasnt
about "i want everyone to sing along because i can write a catchy song" it
was about feeling...it was paying tribute to all of the bands that we
obsessively listened to...it was for harry nilsson and van dyke parks, it
was for jellyfish and xtc, it was our way of saying thanks for making our
lives better...whether it be lyrically or musically...it was never about
being something...being told something...and sticking to something...it
was an adventure...for the artist and for the listener....they didnt get
that...they wanted the old record...the old songs...just with different
words...and few different chords here and there...they didnt care about
"snails" or "dog problems"...what it meant to write those songs...they
knew it wasnt going to be huge...the guitars werent big enough (if big
guitars are your thing thats fine...its just not really our thing right
now)...it wasnt going to be competitive...and so they dropped us...and
rightfully so...we werent going to change...and obviously the major label
business is never going to change...now it comes down to who goes down
first...and we werent ready to go down....sam and i had conversations
about it...whether the business end of things have been fucking with us so
much that we'll never be sane enough to just enjoy it...we thought about
getting out...it wasnt cause we hated each other...or the songs...it was
because we hated the business...
steve called to let us know that he was still onboard...label or not...we
let him know we were still on board...we were going to make this
record...i was going to feel great!....but the record was going to cost
something...how could we afford it?...we were lucky that we had a
management company like nettwerk...not only are they the most forward
thinking music business people around...theyre also (for the most part)
canadian...oh and they care a shit load about the music we make...they
could have waited for the ship to sink...but they told us they would pay
for the record if need be...fortunately we were able to get money for
getting dropped...atlantic actually paid us to leave...so we could afford
the recording ourselves...the only stipulation was that it had to be done
quicker..and when you want something quick...you have to go to the "right
here, right now" capitol of the world...los angeles...i was a little irked
at the thought at first...then steve said it was his personal goal to make
la a wonderful city for me...like i said...i would jump off a cliff if
steve said it was the best way to get coffee...but i wasnt jumping off of
cliffs...i was too excited to make dog problems...la it was...
sam and i moved to the "silver palace" in silverlake california in the
middle of december...we found an amazing studio in burbank california and
an amazing engineer in ken sluiter...and our goal was to just do
everything free from a record label...and someone constantly messing up
the recording process by saying things like "thats not high octane
enough"...the only pressure we had at all was from our manager saying "you
have a tour you accepted in march...get it done by then"...other then that
it was me, sam, steve, and ken working 13 hours a day for 6 days a
week...it became our lives...we were putting so much of ourselves
into...everyone that worked and played on the record was the same way when
they were there contributing...i would leave the studio at 2 in the
morning and wake up at 10 to be at the studio by 11...there was no free
time...the four of us were so invested into this...we all bought into the
concept...in the meantime things outside of the studio were getting
interesting...we had a lot of labels calling and constantly asking about
it...during one week of recording i remember at least 3 different label
people coming down to the studio...our minds werent made up as to what we
were doing with the record once it was recorded...all we wanted to do was
finish it...but we kept our options open and let people sit in the big
chair and listen to what we had been working on...the response was
overwhelmingly positive...but we didnt really think about it too much
beyond the compliments we were receiving...sam and i got used to la...i
was 10 minutes away from where i had been the previous summer when i was
back" on" in my" on and off" relationship...i was ten minutes from
her...she was calling every day...i was singing about it...but how was it
not getting to me? why did i not care?
my phone was off...i woke up in silverlake one morning and started
wondering why for the last month i had a smile on my face...sure i was
down at times...but the thing that had been brining me down for 3 years
was now the last thing on my mind...apparently it had been that way for
awhile...something that took 3 years to get over...i was finally just ok
with it...no big realization...just the fact that things happen...people
make mistakes...and i came out of it alright...i was good...not great...i
was good...and that felt good...i wasnt looking for great anymore...i was
ok...the last song on dog problems is all about that...here this record
was supposed to be the downs...and the ups...and it ended with the
middle...the realization that i dont need to be talking...i dont need to
be locked in my room...i need to enjoy whats going on around me...and if
things go wrong...they go wrong...theres always tomorrow...dog problems
means so much to me in so many different ways...ive never been more proud
of anything in my life...i cried so many times during the making of the
record...all the money i had spent on therapy....and all i had to do was
go make a record...realize that im alright...and realize that i made
something that ill forever be proud of...
shit...the record was supposed to be about how california can change you
for the worse.....it played a huge part in doing the opposite!
so as we were putting the finishing touches on the record (all our friends
came in and recorded, a ton of people we admired came and worked on the
record...all of their responses were so positive that its hard not to get
an ego about it...these are the people i worship...theyre the ones i
wanted to pay tribute to...and they think we've made something unique and
special...its like michael jordan telling you that you have a nice jump
shot (no more sports references...i swear im done)) and we started to
think about what we were going to do with it...how we were going to
release it...labels were getting pretty into it...and we knew we would
have to make a decision soon....after much debate and discussion we
decided that the record was something we had made completely on our
own...so why not release it completely on our own...nettwerk was going to
take care of the distribution...so it would have major label distro...it
would be inside all of the best buys....what more did we want? we didnt
want a big fat check...we did that last time..it made us miserable...and
nothing came out of it...barely anyone at the labels helped us....we
werent making music videos...our songs werent on the radio....so why would
we take their criticism...after all...everything that weve done...any
success weve had is from being real people who make music....from showing
up to play....from 3 years on the road...on interventions there might have
been an elektra logo on the back of the record...but it ended right
there...we were the ones SHOWING people who we were...i wouldnt have it
any other way...no one knows us better then ourselves...so why not release
it ourselves...to me its not only a testament to the hard work we put into
the band (mike, don, marko, toco, everyone else involved in putting these
songs to life....you guys are the best thing we have...its pretty special
when your best friends are some of the most talented musicians)...but i
really feel like the people who come to our shows are such good people
that they dont give a fuck what label its on...they are there because we
are doing something positive...and because we care about them as much as
they care about us...so for the time being we've said "fuck the
middleman"...we're the only people we can blame at this point....im so
tired of even talking about major labels and the split and everything like
this...the music is the only thing i care about...dog problems is the only
thing i care about....so why let someone else ruin it?
the vanity label was born.
the record got finished...we had no time to rehearse...and we had to go
right back out to tour...our first show before the motion city soundtrack
tour was in nashville...i remember the last time we were in nashville
there were about ten kids....reubens accomplice kept asking them why they
hate whales...so we figured why not go there and get some of the rust out
of the way...after all....we havent toured in a year so there should be
like 3 kids there...we can mess up if need be...
unfortunately we were not allowed to mess up...on a sunday nite in
nashville...with ted leo playing across the street (i <3 ted)...our first
headlining show outside of arizona in almost a year was over sold
out....what the fuck happened? we thought we were going to have to play
for another 3 years just to get back to where we were when we left...and
yet its sold out on a sunday nite?....it didnt end there either...the
whole tour went like that...nite after nite ("nite after nite?")...i
couldnt believe it...as if having dog problems wasnt enough...now we have
people showing their support in the most positive way...coming to the
shows...being there from the only thing they knew before...those two
months were such good months...it was the last thing i expected...thanks
so much to all the bands that played with us...and thanks so much for
everyone that came to the shows and sang along...we'll be back in july.
in the meantime things were going great on the vanity label
front...business actually felt natural...we are shooting a video with the
directors we had always dreamed of doing a video with (it wont be
serious...no pouty face)...there were magazines like ap and online
magazines like ap taking notice...supporting the whole idea and
concept....we actually took press photos....ive never been through any of
this before...its exciting...i dont think its going to change who we
are...not one bit...but its still exciting to see people who can help out
actually help out.
so where does that leave me now?...sitting on my bed...ive rambled for
hours...the air still doesnt work...and ive been told that dog
problems...(something that isnt supposed to come out till july)... has
been leaked..not the best news when you just got out of the pool...but it
happens...i freaked out at first...i thought i was going to lock myself in
my room...after all...this is something that we spent over two years
making....its something that you have to take the time...listen to in
headphones...play loud....listen to in order of the tracks...the
artwork....sam did the best artwork he has ever done...the packaging is
something we paid extra for because sams concept was so brilliant...and
now....its leaked on the internet?....i was locking my door...then our
manager called....
"hello"
"we're releasing it on the website today"
"wow"
so....here goes...youve read enough...i shouldnt have to go on about it
anymore...but i will say...if you wanna wait for the full hard copy
release then do so...its july 11...we are gonna be touring right after
that...but if you want to get it now....please do it by purchasing it
right here...we released it...its our money...its our little baby...you
should take the time to listen to it all the way through...free of
distraction...you should turn the songs into your own...its an
adventure...and its something that we put everything we have into...and if
anyone deserves it first...its you guys who have been here with us all
along.
without further ado...

The Format...what's the first single? (as opposed to "The First Single")
Um. We were having issues picking the First Single from Album Number Two. There was talk about drawing straws. Then we thought about you, the people who come to see these songs live and listen to them through your speakers. We would LOVE to hear what you think. We've posted clips from 5 new songs in Hi-Fi section. If you would like to put in a good word for your favorite, send us an e-mail at thelivingroom@nettwerk.com with the name of your #1 pick for first single in the subject line. Please send us your replies by Monday May 8th. We'll let you know as soon as we figure out which song it will be! Your input counts and is important.

20 Questions with Nate
Here are the 20 Questions, you the members of the Living Room, sent in for The Format (as answered by Nate.)
Check here later this week for a sneak peek at some new songs....and we will soon be announcing a FULL USA TOUR that will begin July 13th!
When does the new album come out? (George P)
July 11…that’s right…it’s finally coming out
What label is it coming out on now that you’re not on Atlantic? (Sarah M)
After much discussion and debate we have decided to release the album ourselves on our own imprint called The Vanity Label. This has mostly come from looking out at the crowd every night and realizing that what we’ve built has not come from what major labels traditionally use to “break bands”. We don’t have a video on MTV, we haven’t really had any press and we haven’t been on the radio outside of Arizona. But still you’ve come to this section of the site to read about the new album. So, we’ve set up distribution with Sony/BMG and are going to take this on ourselves. We’re spending our own money to put the record in the same stores you would normally see it, we’re making a video and have hired publicity…basically everything you would expect, except that we are now able to do things exactly the way we want to do them. We’ll start a presale for the album in the next couple of weeks through the merch store. Dog Problems will also be very easy to get online because we’ll have it available to download directly from our site for $7.99 (it will also be on iTunes and places like that).
Who produced the album and where did you record it? (Jesse B)
Steve “dead kross” McDonald produced it in the wonderfully plain city of Burbank California
What are the song titles? (Janet W)
Matches
I’m actual
Time bomb
She doesn’t get it
Pick me up
Dog problems
Oceans
Dead end
Snails
The compromise
Inches and falling
If work permits
Who played on the album besides Nate and Sam? (Bobby J)
Don Raymond played a lot of the bass, Steve McDonald played some bass, john O’Reilly jr. played the drums, as did Joey Waronker, Anna Waronker sang and helped arrange vocals, Mike Schey and Josh Klinghoffer played guitar, Ken Sluiter and Aaron Wendt made noises, Roger Manning jr. arranged songs and played keyboard, Mark Buzzard sang backup vocals, and Sean McCall played percussion…oh and a 14 piece orchestra did their thing.
How did the recording of Dog Problems differ from that of Interventions and Lullabies? (Eric J)
A lot less down time, a lot more hands on…they’re both different records made in very different environments…
How important is it that you guys achieve commercial success? I've heard songs from "Interventions and Lullabies" in stores and on MTV's "Laguna Beach" and I'm pretty sure some people found your music that way. (Chris H)
Its nice if it happens…no big deal if it doesn’t…its just an added bonus onto something that is already like a dream come true…
What’s the deal with Snails? At the Living Room show in LA you said that you changed the first line to “Nico Please Come Home”. (Robert G)
This is true…Nico sadly ran away while we were recording so I changed the lyrics…I miss her…my other dog Otis is psyched.
I feel that you guys are influenced by the Beatles but what other "old school" groups led to you to pursue music? (Matt S)
The Zombies, The Beach Boys, Harry Nilsson, XTC, The Cure, Van Dyke Parks, Cat Stevens, Fleetwood Mac….the list could go on for days.
If you headlined a tour and could have anybody open for you, who would it be? (Mike P)
Right now I would say “the long winters”…they’re one of my three favorite bands making music today
Where did the name for Dog Problems come from? (Tim P)
The album is about a relationship that has been on and off for the last 5 years…it’s off for good now. But every time we got back together we got a dog…thinking it was gonna solve our problems…it only left me with more problems…but I love my dogs more then anything.
Where and how do you draw inspiration for your songs? (Lilly D)
It comes from personal experience and other people’s music…as of right now id like to write more from another person's standpoint. I’m done feeling sorry for myself
What’s the weirdest or coolest thing that a fan asked you to sign? (Katie G.)
Umm…I dunno…a shoe?…they love that one
Why do you voluntarily drink Pabst when there are so many good beers out there!?! (Megan H.)
I don’t like beer in general…Pabst tastes more like water so I'm all about it.
Do your parents like your music? Do they listen to The Format? (Gillian B)
My parents can be a little freaky obsessive..when we finished dog problems they broke into my house and stole a copy…I got really mad.
Nate, you said you were "sports obsessive" and "a walking trivia machine for sports." Which sports are you into? Did you play any when you were younger? (Jessica N)
I like basketball and football mainly…and I'm all about the Arizona teams…I played tennis when I was younger but when I’m home I like to golf and play basketball…I also love to bet on basketball.
What will the album artwork be like for the new album? (Herbie H)
Its pretty crazy…Sam did it and its Samesque…drawn dogs and it’s in a crazy package.
Will we see vinyl editions of your releases? (Matthew S)
Yes…I wanted this record to sound good on vinyl
What's your favorite part about being a part of The Format? (Tim P)
Being on tour with my friends and making music…the obvious reasons…nothing too scary.
When are you going to come to the rest of the world? (Juan J)
It had better be really soon…I would assume w/in the next year we will be taking to the streets.

THE FORMAT SPRING TOUR CONTEST + SURPRISE
First....A surprise! Check The Living Room Hi-Fi for? "Live From The Living Room Volume One"! We've also thrown in a live video just cause we're cool like that.
Second. Welcome to the first Living Room contest! This contest is specific to the HEADLINE TOUR CITIES (not Motion City Soundtrack dates) so there will be TWENTY ONE WINNERS. The prize is a pair of tickets in each market and a meetup with the guys after the show. This contest is unfortunately not going to help you if you are not in a headline tour area BUT we will be doing more contest like this...and you know The Format loves to tour. Don't hate us. We're trying. For the contest, you'll simply have to accomplish all of the following:
1) Help promote the tour! Sam designed a fun poster for the Spring headline tour, which we turned it into a flyer that you can download from the Hi-Fi section. Your goal for this task is to print out as many copies as you can, then put them in places that will let people know about the show in your town. There is room on each flyer to scribble in the exact date and veneue. Stick 'em in coffee shops, record stores, book stores, student unions...anywhere legal. Handing them out at other shows is ace too. When in doubt, ASK if you are allowed!? WE LOVE TO SEE PICTURES of what you've done, so feel free to attach them to your entry email.
2) This one's simple. Are you on myspace? If you're not already a friend of ours, would you add The Format? www.myspace.com/theformat. If you are our friend already, is your top 8 full..maybe chuck them up there? If you hate myspace and are opposed to its existance, make a case for not doing this task and we'll accept it.
3) We're looking to recruit more people for The Living Room. Do you have a friend who might be jealous of your access to exclusives like the "Live From The Living Room" Series? Please ask them to sign up. When they sign up, have them list your email address as how they found out about The Format.
To enter the contest, complete two tasks and then send an e-mail to thelivingroom@nettwerk.com with the subject SPRING TOUR CONTEST and and the exact venue/city you are entering for. For example: " SPRING TOUR CONTEST: STATE THEATRE ST PETERSBURG". Include the following in the email, depending on the task you accomplished:
* a description of what you've done with the flyers. stories! pictures help but are not necessary because not everyone has a digicamera. you can also tell us if you found other fun ways to promote the dates.
* a link to your myspace page
* the email address that your friend used to sign up to TLR (so we can check if they listed you as the "found out" person)
Send your entry in by Friday March 31st ( 5pm EST). We will select ONE WINNER AT RANDOM for each show. Each winner will win a pair of tickets and specifics on where to meet up with the guys for a quick Hi. We'll announce the winners on The Living Room's "What's Up" section on April 1st.

February 3, 2006:
2.3.06
Dear Living Room Members,
Perhaps you'd like an update....maybe you don't....either way I'm gonna take a little of your time to talk about "Us". "Us" being Sam, Myself, Don, Mike, Steve (our producer), and Ken (our engineer)...We are still working 13 hours a day, 6 days a week, in an effort to finish a new Format record that we are calling "Dog Problems"...You might have already known this...but here are a few things that you might not have known:
1. We have stopped reading celebrity magazines due to our busy schedule that includes such things as:
a. Eating tacos.
b. Telling stories we have already told or heard for the 17th time.
c. Debating the pros and cons of a Mac computer (I've discovered it's all pros except for the lack of the right click.)
d. Talking at great length about the band "Sparks".
e. Making crucial decisions about how fuzzy a guitar should really be, and if it needs to be played on a Les Paul.
2. We know how to read:
a. I know that's not a very big deal...but it is...have you ever read Bukowski? Bukowski, Sparks, and coffee have become my new religion....Speaking of religion, I have decided to form a new religion completely based around myself...I'm still compiling my bible but a few things are known about it thus far:
a. Mayo is my version of holy water. (Did you know that the avacado is nature's butter? Completely unrelated.)
b. The only person to be made a saint thus far is Saint Papa Tomas of Fiesta...He and his deciples Mr. Wobblybodies, and Senor Smallmoustache have provided us with the best Mexican food that Sam and I have ever had...and that says a lot being that we are from Arizona where Mexican food is like a second language we eat so much of it.
3. We dont really know how to write:
a. Read two sentences above.
4. There are a lot of guest musicians on this record:
a. I know what you're thinking..... "I really hope they got (insert name) from (insert bad band name) to sing backup vocals on the chorus of "Janet"...unfortunately that's not the case...I don't know the lead singer of My Chemical Romance or whatever...so I can't call him up and ask him to bring his red tie and makeup down to our humble studio so that he can scream "I'm falling in love with you...balloons or no balloons"...plus that song isn't gonna be on the album....but I can tell you that the people that have played on this record are people that Sam and I have musical crushes on....For example Joey Waronker (Beck, Elliot Smith, R.E.M., Badly Drawn Boy, etc etc etc) plays drums on a few songs. His sister Anna (That Dog,) helps me with harmonies, and she also lends her wonderful voice to a few songs, and Roger Manning (Jellyfish) has set up some amazing orchestral arrangements....When Sam and I first heard them we had to go outside and smoke...It was the best sex ever...Josh Klinghoffer (PJ Harvey, John Frusciante) has played guitar on a few songs as well as become our end of the night drinking buddy.
5. Don and Mike are here recording right now!
a. Don is recording bass to "Inches and Falling" as we speak...I'm on the floor of the studio and it sounds great...he's gonna be here till the end of the week.
b. I hear Mike playing the same slide part we worked on 2 hours ago to the song "Pick Me Up"...Ken can be a drill sergeant when it comes to making sure the parts are played just right...Ken can make Sam take a day on some of the easiest things...Fortunately for me, I just have to sing....But when I do have something to play (synth bass forever,) they only make me do it twice, and then spend the next hour doctoring it because it was played so poorly....But Mike is doing fantastic...Once he finishes this song he's gonna go back to Arizona.
6. We love it.
a. We really do. So you should at least like it.
7. I have to put an end to this torture of Mike's fingers.
a. See you on tour in a month and a half.
b. Take care of yourself.
